Erhai Lake in Dali: Complete Guide to Yunnan’s Most Beautiful Lake (2026)

If someone told me there was a place in China where you could ride a bicycle along a crystal-clear lake, with snow-dusted mountains on one side and centuries-old fishing villages on the other, I probably would have thought they were overselling it. Then I saw Erhai Lake.

Erhai Lake sits at 1,972 meters above sea level, right next to Dali Old Town in Yunnan Province. The name literally translates to “ear-shaped sea” — because from above, the lake looks like a giant ear. At 42 kilometers long and roughly 250 square kilometers of surface area, it is one of the largest and cleanest freshwater lakes in all of China. And honestly, pictures do not do it justice.

This is not your average “scenic lake” where you take a photo and leave. Erhai is surrounded by Bai minority villages that have been here for hundreds of years, ancient Buddhist temples perched on tiny islands, and the towering Cangshan Mountains creating a backdrop that makes the whole scene feel almost unreal. Whether you spend one day or one week here, Erhai Lake is the kind of place that stays with you long after you leave.

Here is everything you need to know to plan your visit in 2026.

What Makes Erhai Lake So Special

First, the water clarity. Erhai is remarkably clean for a lake this size. On calm mornings, you can see straight to the bottom in the shallower sections, and the reflections of Cangshan Mountains on the water surface are the kind of thing that makes photographers forget to eat lunch.

Second, the cultural depth. Erhai has been the center of Bai minority civilization for over a thousand years. The Nanzhao Kingdom and later the Dali Kingdom both thrived on these shores. The fishing villages you see today are not tourist reconstructions — they are real communities where Bai families still live, fish, and practice traditions passed down through generations.

Third, the mountain backdrop. The nineteen peaks of Cangshan Mountain rise directly to the west of the lake, reaching over 4,000 meters. Depending on the season and the time of day, those peaks can be bright green, dusted with snow, or completely hidden in clouds.

And fourth, the accessibility. Unlike some of Yunnan’s more remote attractions, Erhai Lake is incredibly easy to reach. Dali Old Town is right there. You can be sipping coffee at a lakeside cafe within fifteen minutes of leaving your hotel.

Best Ways to Experience Erhai Lake

Cycling the Lake

The full loop around Erhai Lake is roughly 130 kilometers, and it is one of the most popular cycling routes in Yunnan. Almost everyone does this on an electric bike, and it is genuinely one of the best things you can do in Dali.

E-bike rentals are widely available in Dali Old Town and in the lakeside villages. Expect to pay around 60-100 RMB per day. The best section is the eastern shore between Shuanglang and Wase — the most dramatic views, the least traffic, and several villages worth stopping at along the way.

Boat Tours on Erhai Lake

The most popular route visits three stops: Nanzhao Fengqing Island, Putuo Island (home to an ancient Buddhist temple), and Xiaoputuo (a tiny island with a picturesque pagoda). The standard group tour takes about three to four hours and costs around 140-180 RMB per person including entrance fees.

Lakeside Villages Worth Visiting

Shuanglang — glamorous boutique hotels, stylish cafes, and the best sunset views on the lake.

Xizhou — authentic Bai minority life, a legendary morning market, and traditional tie-dye workshops.

Wase — one of the largest morning markets in Dali, and some of the best sunrise views over the lake.

Caidian — colorful lakeside scenery, particularly photogenic in spring when rapeseed flowers bloom yellow along the water’s edge.

Photography Spots

For sunrise, head to the eastern shore near Wase. For sunset, the western shore near Longkan village or Shuanglang. For the iconic “Erhai reflection” shot, you want a calm morning between 7 and 9 AM — the section of shoreline just south of Xizhou is particularly good.

Shuanglang: The Prettiest Lakeside Town

Shuanglang sits on a small peninsula on the eastern shore and has become famous for its boutique hotels, stylish cafes, and sunset views. The main draw is the collection of beautifully designed guesthouses lining the waterfront — waking up in a room where the windows open directly onto Erhai Lake with Cangshan Mountains in the distance is the Shuanglang experience.

The town itself is small enough to explore on foot in an afternoon. Sunset is the main event — every evening, locals and visitors gather along the waterfront to watch the sun go down over the lake.

Xizhou: Bai Minority Culture and Morning Markets

The Xizhou morning market is legendary. Starting around 7 AM, vendors spread out through the town’s central square selling everything from fresh vegetables and live chickens to handmade Bai textiles and herbal medicines. This is where local people actually shop.

Xizhou is also famous for its traditional Bai architecture — elaborate courtyards with carved wooden details and whitewashed walls. For a hands-on cultural experience, several workshops offer tie-dye classes using the traditional Bai technique called zharan. Do not leave without trying a Bai-style baba — a crispy flatbread that can be sweet or savory.

If you are worried about navigating a traditional market where very few people speak English, having a local guide with you makes the experience ten times better. Check out our guide to dealing with the language barrier in Yunnan for more tips.

Where to Stay: Lakeside vs Dali Old Town

Lakeside guesthouses — rooms with direct lake views, rooftop terraces, waking up right on the water. Prices from 200 RMB to 1,000+ RMB per night. Shuanglang and the eastern shore have the best options.

Dali Old Town — wider range of restaurants, more social options, budget-friendly. The lake is a 15-minute e-bike ride away.

If you have three or more days, split your time — a night or two lakeside in Shuanglang, then stay in Dali Old Town for the rest.

Best Time to Visit Erhai Lake

March to May (Spring) — arguably the best time. Warm, clear skies, rapeseed flowers blooming yellow. Peak photography season.

September to November (Autumn) — clear skies, golden light, thinner crowds.

June to August (Rainy Season) — afternoon showers, but lush green scenery and lower prices.

December to February (Winter) — cool but pleasant (5-15°C), snow on Cangshan, lake mostly to yourself.

How to Get to Erhai Lake

E-bike: 15 minutes from Dali Old Town. Most popular option, 60-100 RMB/day rental.

Taxi/Didi: 50-80 RMB to Shuanglang. See our guide to paying in China for Didi setup tips.

Local bus: C2 bus goes to Xizhou. A few RMB but slower.

    Practical Tips

Sunscreen is not optional. At 2,000m elevation, UV is strong even when it feels cool.

Swimming is not allowed in most areas. Erhai is a protected water source.

Cash is useful for smaller villages and older market stalls, though most places accept WeChat/Alipay.

Safety is not a concern. The Dali area is very safe for foreign visitors. See our Yunnan safety guide.

    FAQ

Is one day enough for Erhai Lake?

You can see the highlights in one full day, but two to three days lets you experience it at the pace it deserves. Erhai rewards people who slow down.

Can I cycle around the entire lake in one day?

On an e-bike, yes — the 130km loop takes about 6-8 hours with stops. Most people find it more enjoyable to do half the loop or focus on the best sections.

Is Erhai Lake safe for solo travelers?

Absolutely. The Dali area is one of the safest tourist destinations in China. Solo travelers visit regularly without issues.

Do I need to book boat tours in advance?

Usually you can buy tickets on the day. During Chinese national holidays, booking a day or two ahead is wise.

    What should I pack?

Sunscreen, sunglasses, hat, light jacket (breezy on the water), portable phone charger, and comfortable shoes if cycling.
