Yuanyang Rice Terraces
The Earth's Fingerprint Carved by the Hani People for Millennia
Located in southern Yunnan, the Hani Rice Terraces are a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a Globally Important Agricultural Heritage System. From November to April each year is the irrigation season, when the terraces mirror the sky and the sea of clouds drifts across the landscape.
Yuanyang Rice Terraces: The Millennial Contour Lines of the Hani People

At five in the morning, the second row of the Duoyishu viewing platform is already lined with tripods. The first light doesn't rise from the horizon, but seeps up from the three thousand water-filled terraces beneath your feet, dyeing the entire valley in flowing silver foil. This is not a landscape; it is the breathing contour lines carved into the mountain ridges by the Hani people over 1300 years.
The Four Seasons of the Terraces
Best Season: Nov-Apr Photography Time: Sunrise·Sunset·Sea of Clouds
The beauty of the Yuanyang Rice Terraces is defined by water and light. The irrigation period from November to April each year is its most "photogenic" season. The mountains become countless shattered mirrors, reflecting every second of the sky's change from indigo to golden-red. But this is not all.
Nov-Apr (Irrigation Period): Mirror-like terraces, the golden period for photography. The half-hour before sunrise to an hour after sunrise sees the highest probability of mist and clouds at Duoyishu and Bada.
May-Jun (Rice Transplanting Period): Fresh green rice seedlings spread out like a velvet carpet, with clear lines and fewer tourists.
Jul-Sep (Growing Period): The mountains are lush green, a great time for hiking to explore surrounding Hani villages, but expect frequent afternoon rain.
Oct (Harvest Period): Golden waves of rice, scenes of harvest. However, the terrace lines are obscured by rice stalks, making photography less ideal than during the irrigation period.
The Laohuzui (Tiger's Mouth) viewing platform has been closed for years due to geological hazards. The main viewing spots currently are Duoyishu (sunrise), Bada (panoramic sunset), and Aichun (blue terraces). It is recommended to check the latest opening status on the "Honghe Culture and Tourism" WeChat official account before your trip.
Three Viewing Platforms and One Hiking Trail
The viewing platforms are Yuanyang's "standard answers," but beyond them lies a more vivid solution.
Duoyishu
Key Attractions: Sunrise & Sea of Clouds
The most developed platform with open views. Ticket: 70 RMB. During peak season, the front-row spots for tripods are full by 5:30 AM. If you want to avoid the crowd, walk 200 meters along the road to the left of the scenic area; there are several unofficial viewing spots with slightly angled but less crowded views.
Bada
Key Attractions: Panoramic Sunset
Features the largest area of terraces with majestic lines. Ticket: 70 RMB. The light is best after 4 PM. A trail below the platform leads into the terraces for a close-up view of Hani elders walking along the ridges.
Aichun is a free, lesser-known option. Between 9-11 AM, when sunlight hits the water-filled terraces at a specific angle, the water surface takes on a clear azure blue, known as the "blue terraces." It requires a bit of luck and precise timing.
The real terraces are not in the lens of the viewing platforms, but on the 4-kilometer mountain trail hiking from Duoyishu to Bada.
This hiking trail has an elevation change of about 300 meters and passes through several Hani villages. You'll see how water is channeled from forest springs at the mountaintop and distributed via bamboo conduits to every level of the terraces. The ridges are covered in fuzzy wild grass, requiring extra caution while walking.
Staying in a Hani Village
Accommodation Budget: ¥150-400/night Experience: Long Street Banquet·Mushroom Houses
Accommodation in Yuanyang is concentrated in Duoyishu, Shengcun, and Qingkou. Inns in Duoyishu offer terraces right outside the window but are the most expensive (300-500 RMB in peak season). Shengcun is the center of local life, with a market and restaurants, offering more affordable lodging (150-250 RMB), but it requires a 10-minute walk or drive to the viewing platforms.
To experience authentic Hani life, consider booking a homestay in Qingkou or Azheke village. Most houses in these villages are traditional "mushroom houses" (adobe with thatched roofs). After 7 PM, the villages become so quiet you can only hear dogs barking and the sound of flowing water. Communicate with your host in advance; they might invite you to a family dinner.
Hani cuisine is inseparable from the produce of the rice fields:
Hani Dipping Sauce Chicken: Free-range chicken served boiled, with the soul of the dish being a dipping sauce made from mint, cilantro, bird's eye chili, and chicken broth.
Bamboo Tube Rice: Glutinous rice mixed with diced cured meat, roasted fresh by the hearth.
Long Street Banquet: Typically held during major festivals (like the October New Year), with hundreds of tables lining the street. Tourists can participate for a fee, approximately 80-100 RMB per person.
Itinerary & Practical Guide
Getting from Kunming to Yuanyang by public transport is a test of patience. Several direct buses run daily from Kunming South Bus Station to Xinjie Town (the entrance to the Yuanyang Rice Terraces scenic area), taking about 5-6 hours with fares around 140-180 RMB. It's advisable to check the latest schedules and fares before your trip. A more flexible option is to take a high-speed train to Jianshui (approx. 2 hours), then hire a private car from Jianshui to Yuanyang (1.5 hours, costing 200-300 RMB per vehicle).
Day 1 · Arrival & Sunset
Arrive in the afternoon and check into a guesthouse in Shengcun or Duoyishu. After dropping your luggage, head straight to Bada Viewing Platform to watch the sunset's golden light outline the terraces. For dinner, find a small restaurant in Shengcun to try Hani-style chicken with dipping sauce.Day 2 · Sunrise & Hiking
Wake up early to catch the sunrise at Duoyishu. After breakfast, start a hike from Duoyishu along the field ridges to Bada, which takes about 3-4 hours. In the afternoon, visit Qingkou Folk Village to see Hani people weaving cloth and brewing rice wine. If possible, experience a home-cooked dinner in the village in the evening.Day 3 · Details & Departure
In the morning, try your luck at seeing the "blue terraces" at Aichun, or explore the market in Shengcun. Pack up and begin your return journey after lunch.
Clothing: The mountain area has extreme temperature differences between day and night. Even in summer, bring a windproof jacket. For hiking, wear shoes with good grip as the field ridges can be slippery.
Safety: The edges of the terraces have no guardrails. Be very mindful of your footing when taking photos, especially after rain. Do not climb to dangerous spots for a better view.
Tickets: Single-entry tickets for Duoyishu or Bada cost around 70 RMB each. A combo ticket (covering multiple sites) is about 100 RMB. Check the official website for the latest prices before your visit.
Cash: Some village shops and private car drivers only accept cash.
The rhythm of the terraces is dictated by the farming season and weather. A flexible itinerary is key to capturing their true essence.
