Xishuangbanna
Tropical Rainforest Meets Dai Kingdom
China's tropical paradise — Xishuangbanna is where ancient rainforests, wild Asian elephants, Dai ethnic water-splashing festivals, and Southeast Asian flavors converge at Yunnan's southern tip.
Why Visit Xishuangbanna
Xishuangbanna (西双版纳) is unlike anywhere else in China. Bordering Myanmar and Laos at Yunnan's southernmost tip, it's a tropical world of rainforest canopies, wild elephants, golden Buddhist pagodas, and Dai ethnic culture that feels more Southeast Asian than Chinese. The food alone — sticky rice, grilled fish in banana leaves, tropical fruits — is worth the trip.
Top Attractions
Wild Elephant Valley
A nature reserve where you can observe Asia's last wild elephant herds from canopy walkways and observation platforms. The elephants come to the valley's salt licks daily, especially in the morning.
Chinese Academy of Sciences Tropical Botanical Garden
One of the world's finest tropical gardens, set on an island in the Luosuo River. 13,000+ plant species across themed gardens. The "Dancing Grass" and giant water lilies are highlights.
Jinghong Night Market (Gaozhuang)
A massive night market along the Mekong River with Dai barbecue, tropical fruit shakes, crafts, and live performances. The best place to experience Xishuangbanna's vibrant night culture.
Manting Park & Pagodas
The oldest park in Jinghong, dating back 1,300 years as the Dai royal garden. Golden pagodas, peacocks, and a nightly water lantern release ceremony create magical evenings.
Tropical Rainforest Valley
Walk through pristine old-growth rainforest on elevated boardwalks. See the famous "Tree of Dancing" (strangler figs), giant ferns, and if you're lucky, wild gibbons calling at dawn.
Best Time to Visit
November to March (dry season, perfect 25°C weather). April for the famous Water Splashing Festival (Dai New Year, usually April 13-15). Avoid June–August (monsoon rains and extreme heat).
Getting There
Fly into Xishuangbanna Gasa Airport (JHG) in Jinghong — direct flights from Kunming (1h), Bangkok, Chiang Mai, and Luang Prabang. Or take the new Kunming–Vientiane high-speed rail (3.5 hours from Kunming).
