Why Visit Lijiang
Lijiang is the gateway to northwest Yunnan. The UNESCO-listed Old Town features 800 years of Naxi minority heritage, while Jade Dragon Snow Mountain towers 15 kilometers to the north.
Lijiang Old Town (Dayan)
A maze of cobblestone streets, traditional wooden buildings, and flowing canals. UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997.
Must-see:
- Sifang Street: Central plaza and social hub
- Mu Palace: Former Naxi chieftain residence
- Wangu Tower (Lion Hill): Panoramic views to Jade Dragon Snow Mountain
- Canal network: Three main waterways winding through town
Visit early morning (before 9 AM) or evening for the best atmosphere.
Jade Dragon Snow Mountain
Rising to 5,596 meters with three cable car access points:
- Glacier Park (120 yuan): Reaches 4,506m with boardwalk to 4,680m
- Spruce Meadow (55 yuan): Reaches 3,240m, family-friendly
- Yak Meadow (60 yuan): Reaches 3,500m, fewer crowds
Blue Moon Valley: Turquoise glacial lakes at the mountain's base. Included with park entrance (100 yuan).
Total visit cost: 340-390 yuan ($47-54 USD).
Black Dragon Pool
Free entry, 15-minute walk north of Old Town. The iconic reflection of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. Best before 9 AM for mirror-still water. Includes the Dongba Culture Museum showcasing Naxi pictographic writing.
Shuhe Ancient Town
4km from Lijiang, quieter and less commercialized. Ancient Tea Horse Road heritage. Leather-working and traditional dye workshops.
