Why Visit Balagezong

Balagezong is a dramatic limestone canyon 60 kilometers south of Shangri-La. The scenic area features a canyon descending over 2,000 meters, with elevations from subtropical riverbed to alpine peaks exceeding 5,545 meters.

The historic Tibetan village of Balacun sits at 3,000 meters, home to communities that lived in near-total isolation for centuries.

Getting There

  • Distance: 60km southeast of Shangri-La, 1.5-hour drive
  • Private car: 400-600 yuan for daily return trip
  • Organized tour: Recommended for international visitors
  • No public bus service

Best Time to Visit

  • May-June: Wildflowers, peak waterfalls from snowmelt

Grand Canyon Boardwalk

1.5-2 hours along the Gangqu River through narrow canyon sections with turquoise water and sheer rock faces. Relatively flat with gentle inclines.

Balacun Village

Ancient Tibetan settlement at 3,000m. Shuttle bus available. Original stone houses and prayer flags.

Glass Skywalk

Glass platform over the canyon. ~100 yuan additional fee.

Natural Hot Springs
