Yunnan Travel FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions

Visit Yunnan — Custom Tours in Yunnan, China

Planning your trip to Yunnan, China? Here are answers to the most common questions from international travelers. If you have additional questions, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

What is the best time to visit Yunnan, China?

The best time to visit Yunnan is from March to May (spring) and September to November (autumn). Spring offers blooming flowers and pleasant temperatures, while autumn provides clear skies perfect for photography. Yunnan enjoys a mild climate year-round due to its elevation, making it a great destination in any season. Summer (June–August) brings the rainy season but also lush green landscapes.

How do I get to Yunnan from other cities in China?

Yunnan is easily accessible by air, with Kunming Changshui International Airport serving as the main gateway. Direct flights connect Kunming to Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chengdu, and many international cities. You can also fly directly to Lijiang Sanyi Airport. High-speed trains connect Kunming to other major Chinese cities, and the Kunming-Dali-Lijiang railway makes intercity travel within Yunnan convenient.

Do I need a visa to visit Yunnan, China?

Most international visitors need a visa to enter China. However, China offers several visa-free transit policies. Nationals of certain countries may qualify for 72-hour or 144-hour visa-free transit. We recommend checking with your local Chinese embassy or consulate for the latest visa requirements. Our travel agency can provide invitation letters to support your visa application.

What are the must-visit destinations in Yunnan?

Yunnan’s top destinations include: Lijiang Old Town (UNESCO World Heritage Site), Dali with its ancient city walls and Erhai Lake, Shangri-La with Songzanlin Monastery and Pudacuo National Park, Lugu Lake known for Mosuo matriarchal culture, Kunming (the Spring City) with Stone Forest, and Xishuangbanna with its tropical rainforests and Dai minority culture. Tiger Leaping Gorge between Lijiang and Shangri-La is one of the world’s deepest gorges.

How many days do I need to explore Yunnan?

We recommend at least 4–5 days for a focused trip covering Lijiang and one nearby destination (Dali or Shangri-La). For a comprehensive Yunnan experience including Lijiang, Dali, Shangri-La, and Lugu Lake, plan for 7–8 days. If you want to include Kunming and Xishuangbanna, allow 10–14 days. Our most popular tours range from 4 to 8 days.

Is Yunnan safe for international tourists?

Yunnan is generally very safe for international tourists. The region is well-known for its hospitality and welcoming local communities. Tourist areas like Lijiang, Dali, and Shangri-La have good infrastructure. As with any travel destination, we recommend standard precautions: keep valuables secure, stay aware of your surroundings, and travel with a reputable local guide. Our agency provides experienced English-speaking guides for all tours.

What is the altitude in Yunnan? Should I worry about altitude sickness?

Altitude varies significantly across Yunnan. Kunming sits at about 1,900m (6,200ft), Lijiang at 2,400m (7,900ft), and Shangri-La at 3,300m (10,800ft). Mild altitude sickness symptoms like headache or shortness of breath are possible, especially in Shangri-La. We recommend acclimatizing gradually, staying hydrated, avoiding strenuous activity on the first day, and consulting your doctor before travel. Our itineraries are designed with proper acclimatization time built in.

What ethnic minorities live in Yunnan?

Yunnan is China’s most ethnically diverse province, home to 25 of China’s 56 officially recognized ethnic groups. Major groups include the Naxi people in Lijiang (known for Dongba script), Bai people in Dali, Tibetans in Shangri-La, Mosuo people at Lugu Lake (known for their matriarchal society), Dai people in Xishuangbanna, and Yi people across central Yunnan. Each group has distinct traditions, festivals, cuisine, and architecture that enrich the travel experience.

What should I pack for a trip to Yunnan?

Essential items include: layers of clothing (temperatures vary with altitude), a good rain jacket, comfortable walking shoes, sunscreen and sunglasses (UV is strong at high altitude), a hat, basic medications, and a camera. If visiting Shangri-La or high-altitude areas, bring warm clothing even in summer. A small daypack for excursions is useful. We provide a detailed packing list with every booking confirmation.
